Before Buying Directly from Overseas, Understand the Total Landed Cost.
Importing goods into Australia can be more involved than it looks. Under Australian Border Force rules, goods in a consignment with a combined customs value over A$1,000 generally require a formal Import Declaration. Depending on the goods and transport arrangements, import GST, applicable customs duty, government processing charges and commercial clearance fees can also apply.
Together, these extra charges can add up to hundreds of dollars, and delivery may be delayed while documentation and any required payments are completed. It's also worth knowing that the customs value threshold isn't necessarily your checkout total: international freight and insurance are generally excluded from customs value but included in the import GST calculation.
For goods valued at A$1,000 or less, GST may instead be collected by an overseas seller at checkout, and import duty isn't automatically payable on every product. Even so, these rules can be tricky to navigate on your own.
